In our current technology age, it's important to understand the consequences (both good and bad) of using social media to support your business. But some people have hesitation thanks to the myths that surround social media marketing.

Myth #1. Social media is not necessary for my business.
It’s not a fad - it’s here to stay.
Big or small, every size company should partake in social media. In today’s world full of tech-savvy and social media-driven youth, social media is essential when it comes to marketing so that your brand may be seen.
Every large company (Apple, Google, PlayStation) has spent the time to build their social media presence. Evidently it worked, since we're all very familiar with these brands.
Take a hint from these mega corporations and set yourself up a company LinkedIn. Like stated before, you will benefit no matter what the size of your company.
Myth #2. You need to have a profile on every platform.
Your first instinct when developing your social media strategy is to create a profile on every platform.
That’s not a good idea.
Not every platform is going to benefit your brand or company. Come up with a strategy and focus on the 2 or 3 that will make the biggest impact. Being selective will be more valuable, especially while you are learning to manage your social media presence.
Myth #3. The more followers, the better.
The number of followers you have doesn't necessarily equate to the number of people interested in interacting with your brand. Instead of focusing on how many followers you have, focus more on how engaged your audience is. If you can generate an active following while posting relevant content, inevitably your will attract new followers.
Myth #4. Ignoring and deleting negative comments is the best way to get rid of them.
This practice makes for poor customer service which, when discovered, will likely leave a brand on your business that users won't soon forget.
Instead, try to make the situation right by addressing it. Don’t avoid confrontation by just removing the negative comment. Show that you care and you want to solve the issue by putting forth the effort to contact them and make the situation right.
Myth #5. Having just a Facebook and no website is fine.
You cannot pick between a social media platform and your website. You must have both! You should have an online presence that involves both social media platforms that you choose and your own personal branded website.
Try sharing content from your website to your Facebook or Linkedin pages. One of the most beneficial things you can do is link to your social media on your website. All of this not only helps with SEO but it's good for your brand as a whole.
Myth #6. Buying your followers is the way to go when trying to gain authority.
This is one of the most frowned upon practices in the social media world. It makes your business look bad but also does not reflect accurate analytics. These followers are just filler for your site; they are not real and only take up space. Half of the accounts could be fake or fraud!
If you are looking for more followers when you first get started, try starting with your own friend base. Ask them to like your business and then to share your page and some of your posts. Remember, quality over quantity - and naturally, quality will attract quantity.
Myth #7. Every post should promote either your business or your products.
Posting every single product that you sell is a good way for your new followers to hide your page and never see it again. Social media's main purpose is to connect and engage with your followers and users.
Post content and products that your user personas are looking for and might need to solve a problem they have. Be purposeful and selective with your posts. Try connecting with other people by following, liking, commenting, and retweeting their posts.
Social media marketing is a part of your overall marketing strategy so make sure you use it as such. It can be a valuable tool, but use caution: your social media may be open to more instantaneous feedback from your followers, so beware what you post!
